To measure the inner diameter of an existing ring: Place a ring that fits well on the correct finger on a ruler and measure the distance between the inner edges in millimetres. Multiply this value by 3.14 to obtain the inner circumference—and therefore your ring size.
Or measure the finger circumference directly: Wrap a narrow strip of paper or a thread around your finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length in millimetres. This number is your ring size.
Determining ring size without a ring—keeping the surprise
Planning a proposal or a gift and want to find out the size without asking? These methods have proven effective:
- Secretly borrow a ring that the recipient wears on the correct finger and measure its inner diameter.
- Press the ring into a piece of soap or modelling clay and measure the impression.
- Ask a trusted person who is in on the surprise—or use an average size as a guide: for women, it is often between 52 and 56.
