Determine Your Ring Size: How to Measure Your Perfect Ring Size at Home

Splendido Journal 3 min reading time

The ring size corresponds to the inner circumference of your finger in millimeters – in Germany and Austria, the size is identical to this circumference. You can determine it in two ways: by measuring the inner diameter of a well-fitting ring or the circumference of your finger. Both can be done comfortably at home in just a few minutes.

Why it matters

Why the right ring size is so important

A ring accompanies you every day – when grasping, shaking hands, or sleeping. If it’s too loose, it risks slipping off or getting lost. If it’s too tight, it becomes uncomfortable and hard to remove. Especially with a ring made of 585 gold with a genuine gemstone, precise measurement is doubly worthwhile: it protects your investment and ensures the piece sits as beautifully as intended.

At Splendido, you’ll find carefully selected rings from Italian goldsmiths. To ensure every piece fits perfectly, we have developed two precise tools for you: a measuring assistant for your smartphone and a printable size guide in six languages.

Good to know

Fingers change their circumference throughout the day. It’s best to measure in the evening and at normal body temperature – fingers are slightly slimmer in the morning and when cold.

Two methods

Measuring ring size – the most reliable methods

Choose the method that is most convenient for you. Both lead to an accurate result.

  1. With your smartphone: Our digital measuring assistant guides you step by step – no tools needed. You place an existing ring on the screen and calibrate the size directly on your phone.
  2. With the printable PDF guide: For classic measurement using a ruler, string, or paper strip. The size guide is available for download and printing in six languages.

How to measure the inner diameter of an existing ring: Place a ring that fits well on the correct finger on a ruler and measure the distance between the inner edges in millimeters. Multiply this value by 3.14 to get the inner circumference – and thus your ring size.

Or measure the finger circumference directly: Wrap a narrow paper strip or string around your finger, mark the overlap, and measure the length in millimeters. This number is your ring size.

Measuring secretly

Determining ring size without a ring – keeping the surprise

Planning a proposal or gift and want to find out the size without asking? These methods have proven effective:

  • Secretly borrow a ring that the recipient wears on the correct finger and measure the inner diameter.
  • Press the ring into a piece of soap or modeling clay and measure the imprint.
  • Ask a trusted confidant – or use an average size as a guide: for women, it often lies between 52 and 56.

When in doubt, choose a slightly larger size. A later size adjustment is usually uncomplicated.

Ring size chart: diameter, circumference & international sizes

In Germany and Austria, the ring size corresponds to the inner circumference in millimeters. The following values are guidelines for orientation:

Inner circumference / EU size (mm) Inner diameter (mm) US UK
48 15.3 4.5 I
50 15.9 5.25 J ½
52 16.6 6 L ½
54 17.2 6.75 N
56 17.8 7.5 O ½
58 18.5 8.5 Q
60 19.1 9 R ½
62 19.7 10 T ½

Important when printing a size chart or template: set 100% or “actual size” in the print dialog – not “fit to page.” Only then is the scale correct.

Digital measuring

Measuring ring size with an app or smartphone: How reliable is it?

Digital measuring assistants are convenient and surprisingly accurate – provided the screen is correctly calibrated. Our smartphone assistant adjusts the display to your device so that a ring placed on it appears in the correct scale. For extra certainty, we recommend comparing the digital measurement once with the classic method.

The right size is not a detail – it decides whether a ring becomes a daily companion.

Practical tips

Tips for accurate measurement

  • Measure two to three times and at different times of day to get a reliable average.
  • Pay attention to the knuckle: if it is noticeably thicker than the base of the finger, choose a size that comfortably slides over the joint.
  • Wide rings fit tighter – often a half size larger is recommended here.
  • For swollen fingers (e.g., in summer or pregnancy), measure in a calm, cool moment and allow some extra room.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Sprechen Sie uns an – unser Team berät Sie gern, damit Ihr Schmuckstück perfekt sitzt.
